Work is set to begin on the construction of a 1,500-kilometer high-speed rail link between the northern and southern regions of Vietnam in 2026 or 2027, according to Minister of Transport, Nguyen Van Thang.

Vietnam aims to collaborate with China in constructing the railroad, producing rolling stock, and establishing its signalling system, he said to Lou Qiliang, chairman of China Railway Signal & Communication Corporation (CRSC), during a meeting on Tuesday in Dalian City, China.

He noted that these three elements are crucial for the safety of a rail project, adding that China possesses advanced technologies for developing these components and offers them at reasonable prices.

Railroad infrastructure, particularly for the north-south high-speed route, is a key priority for the government in enhancing the country's competitiveness, VN Express reports.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stated at the meeting that China excels in developing high-speed and urban rail networks.

He sought China's support in design, construction, and technology transfer for three cross-border rail projects, which span 700 kilometres between the two countries.

Work on the first project is scheduled to begin next year, connecting China with Vietnam's northern province of Lao Cai, Hanoi, and the port city of Hai Phong.

Furthermore, Lou informed the Prime Minister that his company is looking for opportunities to partner with Vietnam and can offer assistance in researching and developing rail signalling systems.

He also stressed the importance of human resource training in rail projects.
